Since the introduction (class 313 c1976) of 'Tightlock' fully automatic couplers as fitted to class 319 units, how to move these trains when stalled has always been a problem with diesel locomotives fitted with conventional buffers and draw hook being non compatible. An emergency tightlock coupler 'knuckle' is available that can fit to certain locomotives (Not DBS 66) drawhooks once the screw coupling is removed, this allows a locomotive to couple to a 319 and with a main reservoir air pipe connection made, movement at 5mph to clear the line can be made. This is labour intensive the coupler being very heavy, takes a fair while to fit and end speed very low. Behold then, a different approach some 36 years (2012) after the Tightlock coupler introduced! Class 57 locos fitted with retractable tightlock (or Dellner) couplers and able to supply/translate brake supply for 'line speed' operation.
